Digestive System

Feces Formation and Defecation

After 3 to 10 hours in the large intestine, chyme undergoes considerable water loss to form feces, the end product of digestion.
It comprises undigested dietary fiber like cellulose, mucus, sloughed-off epithelial cells, and microbes.
The descending and sigmoid colon stores feces, which undergoes haustral contractions for final drying, retaining enough water for a semisolid texture.
Next, mass peristalsis propels the feces into the usually empty rectum, distending the rectal walls to stimulate the stretch receptors.
As a result, the defecation reflex, an involuntary response for lower bowel movement, is triggered.
It begins with the myenteric plexus, triggering the short reflex to stimulate contractions in the sigmoid colon and rectum.
At the same time, parasympathetic motor neurons in the sacral region trigger the long reflex to enhance mass peristalsis.
The mass movements move the feces into the anal canal, triggering the defecation reflex which relaxes the internal anal sphincter.
Finally, the pudendal nerves of the somatic nervous system inhibit the skeletal muscles of the external anal sphincter, allowing relaxation for the voluntary expulsion of feces.

Feces move through the large intestine as the final stage of digestion. After chyme stays in the large intestine for about 3 to 10 hours, it loses much of its water and becomes feces. Feces contain undigested dietary fiber such as cellulose, mucus, sloughed-off epithelial cells, and microbes.

The descending colon and sigmoid colon store feces before elimination. Haustral contractions help dry the material, but enough water remains to keep it semi-solid. Mass peristalsis then pushes feces into the rectum.

As the rectal walls stretch, stretch receptors are activated. This stretching starts the defecation reflex, which is an involuntary response caused by distention of the rectum. The myenteric plexus then triggers the short reflex, which stimulates contractions in the sigmoid colon and rectum.

At the same time, parasympathetic motor neurons in the sacral region activate the long reflex. This strengthens mass peristalsis and helps move feces into the anal canal by relaxing the internal anal sphincter. The pudendal nerves of the somatic nervous system then relax the skeletal muscles of the external anal sphincter, allowing voluntary expulsion of feces.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
