Description

The large intestine follows a clear pathway from the ileocecal valve to the anus. It surrounds the small intestine on three sides and is divided into the cecum, colon, and rectum. The ileocecal sphincter, a fold of mucous membrane, controls the opening from the ileum into the large intestine.
