Liver Physiology

Liver functions primarily include bile production, metabolic regulation, and hematological functions.
During carbohydrate metabolism, the liver regulates blood glucose levels. Low blood glucose triggers gluconeogenesis, while high blood glucose stimulates insulin release by the pancreas, which promotes glucose conversion and storage as glycogen or lipids.
Protein metabolism involves hepatocytes removing the amino group from amino acids by deamination. The ammonia produced in this process is converted into less toxic urea for excretion.
In lipid metabolism, hepatocytes store triglycerides, synthesize lipoproteins for transporting lipids and produce cholesterol.
Some of this cholesterol is used to synthesize bile, which emulsifies dietary fats, aiding digestion and absorption.
Additionally, hepatocytes oxidize fatty acids to produce ATP, extracting energy from stored lipids.
&#160;The liver also detoxifies blood by eliminating drugs such as penicillin and water-soluble toxins, which are excreted in bile.
The liver also helps regulate blood composition by phagocytosing aged red blood cells and excreting bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown, in bile.

The liver, an essential organ in the human body, performs over 200 vital functions that can be broadly categorized into metabolic, hematological, endocrine regulation, and bile production.
Metabolic Regulation:
The liver is the central organ involved in regulating blood composition. It stabilizes blood glucose levels, maintaining them within the range of&#160; 70&#8211;110 mg/dL. When these levels drop, the liver breaks down glycogen reserves and releases glucose into the bloodstream. It can also synthesize glucose from other carbohydrates or amino acids through a process called gluconeogenesis. Conversely, when blood glucose levels increase, the liver removes glucose from the bloodstream for storage as glycogen or for lipid synthesis.
In lipid metabolism, the liver regulates levels of triglycerides, fatty acids, and cholesterol. When these levels decrease, the liver breaks down lipid reserves and releases them into the bloodstream. If the levels are high, lipids are removed and stored.
Protein metabolism involves hepatocytes breaking down amino acids through deamination for ATP production or converting them into carbohydrates or fats. The toxic byproduct, ammonia, is converted into urea, which is then excreted in urine.
Detoxification:
The liver plays a significant role in detoxifying substances like alcohol and excreting drugs such as penicillin, erythromycin, and sulfonamides into bile. It absorbs lipid-soluble toxins from the diet and stores them in lipid deposits, preventing disruptions to cellular functions. The liver also removes other toxins from the bloodstream, breaking them down or excreting them in bile. Moreover, it chemically modifies or excretes hormones to regulate their activity.
Hematological Regulation:
The liver&#39;s stellate reticuloendothelial (Kupffer) cells phagocytize aged red blood cells, white blood cells, and some bacteria. These cells also recycle iron and other components from hemoglobin.
Endocrine Functions:
The liver plays a significant endocrine role by producing and regulating various hormones and hormone-like substances essential for maintaining homeostasis. It synthesizes insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in response to growth hormone, promoting cell growth and repair. The liver also secretes angiotensinogen, a precursor to angiotensin, which is crucial for regulating blood pressure and fluid balance. Additionally, it produces thrombopoietin, a hormone that stimulates platelet production in the bone marrow. The liver contributes to hormonal balance by metabolizing and inactivating steroid hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. It also participates in the endocrine regulation of vitamin D metabolism by converting vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the primary circulating precursor to its active form, which is critical for calcium and phosphate regulation.

The liver helps keep blood chemistry stable and supports many body systems. It performs metabolic, hematological, endocrine, and bile-producing functions that are essential for homeostasis.

In metabolism, the liver helps regulate blood glucose levels in the normal range of 70 to 110 mg/dL. When glucose levels drop, it breaks down glycogen and releases glucose into the blood. It can also make glucose from other carbohydrates or amino acids through gluconeogenesis, which means making new glucose.

When blood glucose is high, the liver removes glucose from the bloodstream for storage as glycogen or for lipid synthesis. It also controls lipid levels by managing triglycerides, fatty acids, and cholesterol. If lipid levels are low, the liver breaks down lipid stores and releases them. If levels are high, it removes and stores them.

The liver also helps with protein metabolism. Hepatocytes, the main liver cells, break down amino acids through deamination to make ATP, the cell’s energy molecule, or convert them into carbohydrates or fats. The ammonia made during this process is toxic. The liver changes it into urea, which leaves the body in urine.

Another major job of the liver is detoxification. It helps process alcohol and excretes drugs such as penicillin, erythromycin, and sulfonamides into bile. It also absorbs lipid-soluble toxins from food and stores them in lipid deposits, which helps prevent cell damage. In addition, the liver removes other toxins from the blood and can break them down or send them out in bile.

The liver also supports blood and immune functions. Its stellate reticuloendothelial, or Kupffer, cells, phagocytize, meaning engulf and digest, aged red blood cells, white blood cells, and some bacteria. These cells also recycle iron and other parts of hemoglobin.

The liver has important endocrine roles as well. It makes insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1, in response to growth hormone. This supports cell growth and repair. It also secretes angiotensinogen, a precursor to angiotensin that helps regulate blood pressure and fluid balance, and thrombopoietin, which stimulates platelet production in the bone marrow.

The liver helps keep hormones in balance by metabolizing and inactivating steroid hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. It also takes part in vitamin D metabolism by converting vitamin D into 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main circulating precursor to the active form. This step is important for calcium and phosphate regulation.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
