Digestive System

Hormones Secreted by the Stomach

The specialized enteroendocrine cells of the gastric glands secrete most of the digestive hormones.
These cells, such as the G, D, and enterochromaffin-like cells, are typically scattered among the mucus-secreting cells at the base of the gastric glands. Each cell type secretes different digestive hormones.
G cells secrete gastrin, which promotes stomach muscle contraction for gastric motility. Gastrin also regulates gastric acid release.
The enterochromaffin-like cells produce histamine, which stimulates gastric acid release from the parietal cells. In addition, scattered enterochromaffin cells in the mucosa secrete serotonin to regulate gastrointestinal motility, aiding smooth food movement through the digestive tract.
In contrast, somatostatin released by D cells inhibits gastrin secretion, slowing digestion and regulating the secretion of other digestive hormones.
Besides secreting mucus and enzymes, the gastric glands in the fundic region possess P/D1 cells, which produce ghrelin to regulate hunger and satiety.
Ghrelin levels spike before meals to initiate hunger and decrease shortly after meals, curbing appetite.

Each of these hormones secreted by different enteroendocrine cells plays a unique role in digestion. Here are a few examples:

Stomach hormones help control digestion by signaling when to make acid, move food, and adjust appetite. These hormones come from enteroendocrine cells in the stomach lining. Even though these cells make up only about 1% of stomach epithelial cells, they have a major effect on digestive function.

G cells secrete gastrin. Gastrin stimulates the production of gastric acid and enzymes. It also increases contraction of stomach muscles, which helps move food through the digestive tract.

D cells release somatostatin. This hormone inhibits gastrin secretion. When acidity in the stomach becomes too high, somatostatin helps reduce gastrin release and keeps digestion balanced.

Other stomach hormones also support digestion and energy control. P/D1 cells produce ghrelin, often called the hunger hormone, because it stimulates appetite. Ghrelin also promotes the release of growth hormone and helps regulate metabolism and energy balance.

Enterochromaffin-like cells produce histamine, which stimulates gastric acid secretion. Enteroendocrine cells also secrete serotonin, which helps regulate gastrointestinal motility. Serotonin supports smooth movement of food through the digestive tract. Together, these hormones from the stomach mucosa help digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall digestive health.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
