Tooth Anatomy

The tooth has a crown and a root connected via a constricted area known as the neck.
The crown is visible above the gingivae and is protected by enamel.
The root of the tooth resides within the jawbone, and interestingly, the number of roots varies among different types of teeth.
Incisors, canines, and lower premolars have single roots. The upper premolars and the first two lower molars generally have two roots, while the upper molars typically have three.
The cementum, a calcified connective tissue, covers the root, securing the tooth to the periodontal ligament.
The majority of the tooth&#39;s internal space is filled with dentin, which is protein-rich and made up of extremely hard calcified connective tissue.
Dentin encapsulates the pulp cavity containing soft connective tissue, which extends into the root, forming the root canal. Dentin has radial striations known as dentinal tubules that house processes of odontoblasts, which secrete and maintain dentin.
Proximally, the root canal connects to an opening called the apical foramen, through which the tooth receives its nerve and blood supply.

Enamel
Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth and is primarily composed of hydroxyapatite, a form of calcium phosphate. It&#39;s incredibly hard and translucent. Its hardness protects the tooth from decay and physical damage, while its translucent property allows the color of the underlying dentin to show through, giving teeth their characteristic color.
Dentin
Dentin lies beneath the enamel. It&#39;s a white-to-yellowish colored, bone-like substance that makes up most of the tooth&#39;s structure. Although not as hard as enamel, it&#39;s still quite resistant to wear and tear. If dentin becomes exposed (due to enamel erosion), it can lead to tooth sensitivity.
Cementum
Cementum is a bone-like tissue covering the root of the tooth. It helps secure the tooth in place within the jawbone by anchoring it to the periodontal ligament.
The Root Canal and Apical Foramen
Inside the root(s) of the tooth lies a canal known as the root canal. It houses the pulp chamber, which contains the tooth&#39;s blood vessels and nerves. At the end of each root canal is an opening called the apical foramen, where these blood vessels and nerves enter and exit the tooth.
Nerves and Blood Supply
The primary nerve supplying the teeth is the trigeminal nerve, specifically its third division known as the mandibular nerve for the lower teeth, and its second division, the maxillary nerve, for the upper teeth.
These nerves branch off to provide sensation to each tooth. They enter the tooth through the apical foramen and reach the pulp chamber, transmitting sensations of pain, temperature, and pressure.
Blood supply to the teeth is mainly via the maxillary artery (for upper teeth) and the inferior alveolar artery (for lower teeth), both branches of the external carotid artery. These arteries bring oxygenated blood to the tooth, while veins carry deoxygenated blood away.

Oral Cancer

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
