Pancreas

The pancreas is a pinkish-gray organ located behind the stomach. It extends from the duodenum to the spleen.
It can be divided into a broad head located within the duodenum loop, a slender body, and a short, rounded tail.
The pancreas is categorized into the exocrine and endocrine parts.
The exocrine part has ducts ending in acini that produce pancreatic juice.
These cells are packed with rough endoplasmic reticulum and zymogen granules that store inactive digestive enzymes.
The large pancreatic duct and small accessory duct deliver the pancreatic juice to the duodenum.
The pancreatic duct meets the bile duct, both emptying into the duodenal ampulla.
At the mouth of the ampulla, the sphincter of the hepatopancreatic ampulla or sphincter of Oddi regulates the passage of pancreatic juice and bile.
In contrast, the accessory duct opens directly into the duodenum, bypassing the ampulla.
The endocrine part of the pancreas consists of mini-endocrine glands called pancreatic islets, or islets of Langerhans, which secrete hormones like insulin and glucagon.

The organ&#39;s surface has a lumpy, lobular texture that gives it a unique appearance.
The broad head of the pancreas lies within the loop formed by the duodenum, while its slender body reaches towards the spleen. The tail of the pancreas is short and bluntly rounded. This organ plays a dual role, serving both exocrine and endocrine functions.
The exocrine part of the pancreas produces pancreatic juice, which aids in digestion. This section consists of acini and ducts. Acini are clusters of secretory acinar cells that produce an enzyme-rich component of pancreatic juice. These cells are filled with rough endoplasmic reticulum and zymogen granules, the latter containing inactive digestive enzymes. The ducts transport these secretions from the acinar cells. The large pancreatic duct delivers the secretions to the duodenum. In some individuals, an accessory pancreatic duct branches from the main pancreatic duct.
The pancreatic duct meets the common bile duct in the duodenum. Both these ducts empty into the duodenal ampulla, a chamber roughly halfway along the length of the duodenum. The passage of pancreatic juice and bile is regulated by the sphincter of the hepatopancreatic ampulla, also known as the sphincter of Oddi.

The pancreas is a pinkish-gray organ behind the stomach. It stretches from the duodenum toward the spleen and is tightly attached to the back wall of the abdominal cavity. Its surface is lumpy and lobular, and its shape includes a broad head, a slender body, and a short, blunt tail.

The pancreas has two jobs. Its exocrine part makes pancreatic juice for digestion, while its endocrine part releases hormones into the body. The exocrine tissue is built from acini and ducts. Acini are clusters of acinar cells that produce an enzyme-rich fluid. These cells contain rough endoplasmic reticulum and zymogen granules, which store inactive digestive enzymes.

The ducts carry the secretion away from the acini. The large pancreatic duct delivers pancreatic juice to the duodenum. In some people, an accessory pancreatic duct also branches from the main duct. The pancreatic duct joins the common bile duct in the duodenum. Both ducts empty into the duodenal ampulla, a chamber about halfway along the duodenum. The sphincter of the hepatopancreatic ampulla, also called the sphincter of Oddi, controls the release of pancreatic juice and bile.

The endocrine part of the pancreas is made of scattered pancreatic islets, which are small hormone-secreting glands. These islets release insulin and glucagon. These hormones help regulate blood glucose levels.

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
