Deglutition

Deglutition, or swallowing, is a mechanism that transports food from the mouth to the stomach.
This process has three stages &#8212; the buccal, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases.
The voluntary buccal phase begins in the mouth. Here, the tongue moves upward and backward against the palate, pushing the bolus down.
Next, the bolus enters the oropharynx, and the pharyngeal phase begins.
This involuntary phase is regulated by the deglutition center in the medulla oblongata and the lower pons.
Here, the soft palate and uvula move upward, closing the nasopharynx and stopping the bolus from entering the nasal cavity. Simultaneously, the epiglottis closes the larynx&#39;s entrance to keep food out of the respiratory tract.
The esophageal phase starts as the bolus enters the esophagus due to the relaxation of the upper esophageal sphincter. At this stage, peristalsis begins and helps push the bolus further down.
The upper esophagus contracts while the lower part broadens, receiving the bolus. This action repeats until the bolus reaches the lower esophageal sphincter, which then relaxes, permitting the bolus to enter the stomach.

Swallowing, otherwise known as deglutition, facilitates the transport of food from the mouth to the stomach. It is a multifaceted process that involves both the tongue and the muscles of the throat and esophagus. Saliva and mucus aid in this process, which takes approximately 4 to 8 seconds for semi-solid or solid food and around 1 second for liquids or very soft food.
Swallowing can be divided into three stages: the voluntary phase, the pharyngeal phase, and the esophageal phase. Although the voluntary phase is under your control, the latter two are managed by the autonomic nervous system.
During the voluntary phase, chewing is finished, and the swallowing process begins. The tongue moves backward and upward against the palate, propelling the food to the rear of the oral cavity and into the throat. Other muscles help keep the mouth shut and prevent the food from slipping out.
The pharyngeal phase is initiated next, with receptors in the throat sending impulses to the swallowing center in the medulla oblongata. The uvula and soft palate then move upward, blocking off the nasopharynx, while the epiglottis prevents food from entering the windpipe. Breathing halts momentarily during deglutition. The food is then moved through the throat and into the esophagus via the relaxation of the upper esophageal sphincter.
The esophageal phase marks the final stage of swallowing and the commencement of peristalsis, controlled by the medulla oblongata. The bolus is transported through the esophagus and towards the stomach via peristalsis. The muscularis&#39; circular muscle layer contracts, forcing the food distally. Simultaneously, the muscularis&#39; longitudinal muscle layer also contracts, expanding to receive the food. As the food approaches the stomach, the esophagus expands, triggering a short reflex that relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing the food to enter the stomach. The mucus secreted by the esophagus lubricates the food and reduces friction during this final phase.

Swallowing is the process that moves food from the mouth to the stomach. It uses the tongue, the muscles of the throat, and the esophagus. Saliva and mucus help food move smoothly. For semi-solid or solid food, swallowing takes about 4 to 8 seconds. Liquids or very soft food usually take about 1 second.

Swallowing has three stages: the voluntary phase, the pharyngeal phase, and the esophageal phase. The voluntary phase is under conscious control. During this stage, chewing ends and the tongue moves backward and upward against the palate. This pushes the food to the back of the mouth and into the throat. Other muscles help keep the mouth shut and stop food from slipping out.

The pharyngeal phase starts when receptors in the throat send signals to the swallowing center in the medulla oblongata. The soft palate and uvula move upward to block the nasopharynx, which is the upper part of the throat behind the nose. The epiglottis also helps keep food out of the windpipe. Breathing stops briefly during this part of swallowing. The upper esophageal sphincter then relaxes, and food enters the esophagus.

The esophageal phase is the final stage of swallowing and the start of peristalsis, a wave-like muscle movement that moves food forward. The medulla oblongata controls this phase. The bolus, or ball of swallowed food, travels through the esophagus toward the stomach. The circular muscle layer pushes the food distally, while the longitudinal muscle layer also contracts and expands the tube to receive the food. As the food reaches the stomach, the esophagus expands and triggers a reflex that relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter. This lets the food enter the stomach. Mucus from the esophagus also lubricates the bolus and lowers friction during this final step.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
