Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a muscular sac located in a shallow fossa on the inferior surface of the liver. It measures about 10 cm in length and is roughly the size of a kiwi fruit.
It has three regions: the fundus, the central body, and the tapered neck.
The cystic duct extends from the gallbladder and unites with the common hepatic duct, forming the common bile duct.
The primary function of the gallbladder is to store and concentrate bile when it is not immediately needed for digestion.
Thanks to its honeycomb-like mucosal folds, the gallbladder can expand as it fills, increasing its capacity to hold bile.
As the duodenum receives partially digested chyme from the stomach, the gallbladder contracts to expel bile into the cystic duct. The bile then travels via the common bile duct, ultimately reaching the duodenum.
If bile becomes too concentrated, it can form insoluble mineral and salt crystals called gallstones. Small gallstones are usually excreted without issue, but larger ones can damage the gallbladder or block the cystic duct.

When empty, the gallbladder&#39;s mucosa forms honeycomb-like folds, similar to the rugae in the stomach. These folds allow the gallbladder to expand as it fills. Its muscular wall contracts to force bile into the cystic duct, from where it flows into the common bile duct.
However, if bile becomes excessively concentrated, insoluble minerals and salts may crystallize, leading to the formation of gallstones.

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ in the digestive system. It sits in a hollow area on the lower surface of the liver. About 10 cm long, it is roughly the size of a kiwi fruit.

Its main job is to store and concentrate bile. Bile is a fluid made by the liver that helps with digestion. When the gallbladder is full, it holds about 40 to 70 mL of bile.

The gallbladder has three regions: the fundus, body, and neck. A tube called the cystic duct extends from the neck. It joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct.

As bile stays in the gallbladder, water is absorbed from it. This makes the bile more concentrated, especially in bile salts and other components. When the gallbladder is empty, its mucosa, or inner lining, forms honeycomb-like folds. These folds are similar to the rugae in the stomach and help the organ expand as it fills.

The muscular wall of the gallbladder contracts to push bile into the cystic duct. From there, bile flows into the common bile duct. If bile becomes too concentrated, insoluble minerals and salts may crystallize and form gallstones.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
