Histology of the Large Intestine

The wall of the large intestine comprises four layers: the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa.
The mucosa, lined by intestinal glands, consists of simple columnar epithelium, lamina propria made of areolar connective tissue, and muscularis mucosae made of smooth muscle.
The epithelium of the mucosa contains absorptive cells, which lack villi but possess microvilli, and goblet cells, which secrete mucus.
&#160;In contrast, the mucosa of the distal end of the anal canal is lined with stratified squamous epithelium which helps prevent abrasion and friction caused by the passage of feces.
The submucosa of the large intestine is made of areolar connective tissue, providing support and elasticity.
The muscularis has an external layer of longitudinal smooth muscle and an internal layer of circular smooth muscle. The longitudinal muscles form three distinct bands called the teniae coli.
Contractions in the teniae coli generate a series of pouches called haustra, giving the colon its distinctive puckered appearance.
The serosa is part of the visceral peritoneum. Small pouches of this peritoneum filled with fat, known as omental appendices, are attached to the teniae coli.

The innermost mucosa layer comprises simple columnar epithelium, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae. This layer is primarily populated with absorptive cells, tasked with water absorption, and goblet cells, responsible for secreting mucus to lubricate the passage of colonic contents. These cells are housed within tubular structures known as intestinal glands or crypts of Lieberk&#252;hn. Also present in the lamina propria are solitary lymphatic nodules that can extend into the submucosa.
The submucosa, made of areolar connective tissue, provides support and elasticity. The muscularis layer is characterized by an external longitudinal smooth muscle layer and an internal layer of circular smooth muscle. In the large intestine, sections of the longitudinal muscles thicken into three bands, known as teniae coli. These bands, through their tonic contractions, gather the colon into a series of pouches called haustra, giving the colon its distinctive puckered appearance.
The outermost layer, the serosa, is part of the visceral peritoneum. Small pouches of this peritoneum, filled with fat and attached to the teniae coli, are known as omental or epiploic appendices.

The large intestine has four main layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa. These layers work together to support water absorption, movement, and protection in the colon.

The mucosa is the innermost layer. It includes simple columnar epithelium, the lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosae. This layer contains absorptive cells that take up water and goblet cells that release mucus. The cells sit in tubular intestinal glands called crypts of Lieberkühn. Solitary lymphatic nodules are also found in the lamina propria, and some may extend into the submucosa.

Outside the mucosa is the submucosa. This layer is made of areolar connective tissue, which gives support and elasticity to the large intestine.

The muscularis layer contains smooth muscle. It has an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer. In the large intestine, parts of the longitudinal muscle thicken into three bands called teniae coli. Their tonic contractions gather the colon into pouches called haustra, which give the colon its puckered look.

The outermost layer is the serosa, which is part of the visceral peritoneum. Small fat-filled pouches of this membrane can attach to the teniae coli. These are called omental, or epiploic, appendices.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
