Digestive System

Gross Anatomy of the Liver

The liver is the largest gland in the body, weighing approximately 1.4 kg in adults.
It is wedge-shaped and located more in the right hypochondriac and epigastric regions, spanning the midline into the left hypochondriac region.
Positioned under the diaphragm, the liver is mostly shielded by the rib cage and is covered by the visceral peritoneum, except for a small bare area that touches the diaphragm.
The liver has four main lobes: the right, left, caudate, and quadrate lobes.
The falciform ligament, a mesentery, divides the right and left lobes anteriorly and suspends the liver from the diaphragm and anterior abdominal wall.
The round ligament, a fibrous remnant of the fetal umbilical vein, runs along the inferior edge of the falciform ligament.
The lesser omentum anchors the liver to the lesser curvature of the stomach.
Blood vessels reach the liver by traveling through the lesser omentum&#39;s connective tissue, converging at the porta hepatis.
The gallbladder is located in a recess on the inferior surface of the right liver lobe.

The liver, the largest gland within the human body, is a firm and reddish-brown organ. This wedge-shaped structure weighs approximately 1.5 kg and occupies a significant portion of the right hypochondriac and epigastric regions. It extends more to the right of the body&#39;s midline than to the left.
Located under the diaphragm, the liver is almost entirely ensconced within the rib cage, providing it with substantial protection. Except for the superior most bare area, the liver&#39;s surface is covered by a robust fibrous capsule and a layer of visceral peritoneum.
On its anterior surface, the falciform ligament marks the division between the organ&#39;s left and right lobes. Along the inferior edge of the falciform ligament runs the round ligament, a fibrous remnant of the fetal umbilical vein. The posterior surface of the liver features an impression made by the inferior vena cava, indicating the division between the right lobe and the smaller caudate lobe.
The gallbladder finds its place in a recess on the inferior surface of the right liver lobe. Meanwhile, the quadrate lobe is situated between the left lobe and the gallbladder. Afferent blood vessels and other structures reach the liver via the connective tissue of the lesser omentum, converging at a region known as the porta hepatis.

The liver is the largest gland in the human body. It is a firm, reddish-brown, wedge-shaped organ. In adults, it weighs about 1.5 kg and lies mainly in the right hypochondriac and epigastric regions. It sits under the diaphragm and extends farther to the right of the body’s midline than to the left.

The liver is almost completely protected by the rib cage. Its surface is covered by a strong fibrous capsule and a layer of visceral peritoneum. The only exception is the superior bare area, which is not covered by peritoneum.

The falciform ligament is seen on the anterior surface of the liver. It marks the division between the left and right lobes. Along its lower edge runs the round ligament, which is a fibrous remnant of the fetal umbilical vein.

The posterior surface shows an impression from the inferior vena cava. This feature helps separate the right lobe from the smaller caudate lobe. The gallbladder sits in a recess on the inferior surface of the right lobe. The quadrate lobe lies between the left lobe and the gallbladder.

Blood vessels and other structures enter the liver through the connective tissue of the lesser omentum. They come together at the porta hepatis, the gateway region for these afferent structures.

Digestive System

Content elaboration: The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal) as well as various accessory organs including the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. The digestive system processes and supplies the molecules needed to sustain the living tissues within the body through the absorption of nutrients. Six major functions of the digestive system include secretion, ingestion, mechanical processing, enzymatic digestion, absorption and excretion. The lining of the digestive system protects surrounding tissues from the mechanical and enzymatic stresses of the digestive process. Processes of the digestive system include the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food into small molecules which are then absorbed by the digestive tract. Specific actions within the digestive system include mastication, peristalsis, segmentation and the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for digestion. The metabolic functions of the accessory organs play strategic roles in the breakdown of food products, the maintenance of glucose levels within the blood and the regulation of homeostasis in the body. Indigestible material is excreted as waste. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, conditions such as gallstones, heartburn, ulcers, dehydration, diarrhea, cirrhosis and cancers of the digestive system. Investigations are used to understand and explain the digestive system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
