Denaturerende ureum polyacrylamidegelelektroforese wordt gebruikt voor het enkelstrengs DNA gescheiden of tot RNA tot een limiet van 500 nucleotiden. Ureum in combinatie met de hitte gedenatureerd monsters en ongestructureerde enkele strengen migreren binnen de gel matrix op basis van hun moleculair gewicht.
