Una combinazione di washout del tensioattivo con soluzione salina allo 0,9% (35 ml/kg di peso corporeo, 37 °C) e ventilazione ad alto volume di marea con basso PEEP per causare lesioni polmonari indotte da un ventilatore moderato (VILI) provoca la sindrome sperimentale da distress respiratorio acuto (ARDS). Questo metodo fornisce un modello di danno polmonare con reclutabilità bassa / limitata per studiare l'effetto di varie strategie di ventilazione per periodi prolungati.
