Escherichia coli provoca sepsi nei neonati che ingeriscono i batteri intorno al momento della nascita. Il processo coinvolto nella capacità di E. coli di viaggiare dal tratto enterico al flusso sanguigno è poco compreso. Questo modello in vitro valuta la capacità dei ceppi di E. coli di viaggiare attraverso le cellule epiteliali intestinali.
