Deze moleculair gebaseerde aanpak voor het bepalen van bacteriële fitness vergemakkelijkt nauwkeurige en nauwkeurige detectie van micro-organismen met behulp van unieke genomische DNA-barcodes die worden gekwantificeerd via digitale PCR. Het protocol beschrijft de berekening van de concurrerende index voor salmonella stammen; de technologie is echter gemakkelijk aan te passen aan protocollen die absolute kwantificering van enig genetisch-smeedbaar organisme vereisen.
