Methoden voor bioluminescentie beeldvorming van bacteriële infecties bij levende dieren beschreven. Ziekteverwekkers worden aangepast om luciferase te drukken waardoor optisch het gehele lichaam van infecties in levende dieren. Diermodellen kunnen besmet zijn met luciferase uitdrukken pathogenen en de daaruit voortvloeiende beloop van de ziekte gevisualiseerd in real-time door bioluminescentie imaging.
